A Custom Floors

Texas does not have a statewide license specifically for flooring installers, but local jurisdictions may require business registrations, permits or inspections for remodeling work. Always ask a contractor for proof of general liability insurance and workers’ compensation (or a valid waiver), check city of Houston permitting requirements for the scope of work, and request references. If your home was built before 1978, federal EPA Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) rules apply when disturbing painted surfaces, so ask for RRP certification if applicable.

Houston’s high humidity, seasonal temperature swings and occasional flooding make moisture control the top concern. Solid hardwood is prone to expansion and cupping in humid conditions, so engineered hardwood, luxury vinyl plank, porcelain tile or properly installed moisture-resistant systems are often better choices for many areas. Require moisture testing (e.g., in-situ relative humidity or calcium chloride tests for concrete slabs), proper vapor barriers or underlayment, and manufacturer-recommended acclimation and expansion gaps in your written scope of work.

Get a written contract that lists materials (brand, style, grade), exact square footage covered, scope of work (removal, subfloor prep, moisture testing, underlayment, transitions, trim), timeline, cleanup and disposal, payment schedule (reasonable deposit, balance upon completion), and change order procedures. Ask for copies of manufacturer warranties and any installer or workmanship warranty in writing, proof of insurance, at least three local references or job photos, and a lien release or final invoice clause to protect against subcontractor liens.
