A-Tex Above Ground Pools, Spas, & Billiards

San Antonio homeowners should hire contractors who carry the appropriate licenses, insurance and pull required permits. While licensing requirements for pool work can vary (some trades like electrical or plumbing require state-licensed contractors), local building permits and inspections are required for new pools and many major alterations. Ask the contractor to provide proof of general liability insurance, workers’ compensation (or a waiver), copies of any state or local licenses they hold, and examples of recent projects with references. Verify permits are pulled with the City of San Antonio and check for complaints or reviews with the Better Business Bureau and local consumer protection offices before signing a contract.

Timelines depend on the pool type and scope: prefabricated fiberglass installs are often fastest (sometimes 2–4 weeks), vinyl-lined pools typically take a few weeks to a couple months, and gunite/concrete builds commonly take 8–16 weeks or longer for complex designs. Renovations (equipment upgrades, replastering, deck work) vary from a few days to several weeks. Weather, soil conditions (San Antonio can have clay/caliche that affects excavation), permit timing and subcontractor availability will affect the schedule. Because San Antonio has a long swimming season but contractors are busiest in spring and early summer, many homeowners schedule new builds in fall or winter to avoid peak delays and be ready for warmer months.

San Antonio’s hot, sunny climate increases evaporation, chemical usage and algae risk, so expect regular maintenance. Typical items include: daily/weekly water testing and chemical adjustments (chlorine or salt systems), routine filter and pump maintenance, skimming and cleaning, periodic shock treatments and equipment inspections. Energy-efficient equipment such as variable-speed pumps, LED lighting and properly sized filters can lower operating costs; automated controls, covers and efficient heaters (if used) also help. Manufacturers usually provide warranties on equipment, while structural warranties vary by contractor—get warranty details in writing. Ask contractors for an estimated annual operating cost range and whether they offer maintenance plans or can train you on basic care.
