In Texas, structural pest control professionals and applicators must be licensed through the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA). Ask to see the company’s TDA license number and the applicator’s credentials, then verify them on the TDA license lookup. Also confirm the company carries general liability insurance (and workers’ comp if employees will be on your property) and request proof of coverage before work begins.

A reputable contractor will start with an inspection and provide a written treatment plan describing targeted pests, methods, timeline, and any required preparation. Treatments vary by pest—baits and perimeter treatments for ants/roaches, traps and exclusion for rodents, larval control and barrier or misting options for mosquitoes, and specialized inspections/treatments or bait systems for termites. In Houston’s warm, humid climate many pests are year‑round and may require ongoing quarterly or monthly service; expect follow‑up visits or re‑treatments within a specified window and clear guidance on when areas are safe to re‑enter.

Pest products used by licensed operators are typically EPA‑registered and must be applied according to label directions; ask the contractor for product names, active ingredients, and Safety Data Sheets. Follow any re‑entry and ventilation instructions, keep children and pets away from treated surfaces until safe, cover fish tanks, and ask about low‑toxicity or non‑chemical alternatives (baits, exclusion, habitat reduction). A good contractor will explain risks, post‑treatment precautions, and follow integrated pest management practices to minimize chemical use.
