American Window Systems (A Window Inc.)

Fort Worth generally requires building permits when work changes a structural opening, affects egress, or alters the exterior envelope; simple like‑for‑like sash replacements may have different requirements. Texas does not have a statewide licensure category specific to window and door installers, but many municipalities (including Fort Worth) enforce local permitting, inspections, and sometimes contractor registration. Before hiring, check the City of Fort Worth Building Inspections for permit rules, and require the contractor to carry general liability insurance and, if applicable, workers’ compensation. Ask for proof of local registration, references, and written estimates that spell out permits and inspections.

Fort Worth has hot, humid summers and occasional severe storms, so choose windows and doors that reduce solar heat gain, resist water infiltration, and are durable in high heat. Look at NFRC labels (U‑factor and SHGC) to compare thermal performance—lower U‑factor means better insulation; lower SHGC reduces solar heat gain. Low‑E coatings, multi‑pane glass, warm‑edge spacers, good weatherstripping, and thermally broken frames help energy performance. For storm‑prone areas consider impact‑rated or reinforced products and strong installation flashing to prevent leaks. ENERGY STAR products appropriate for Texas and manufacturer performance data can help you compare options. Proper installation is as important as product choice for energy savings and leak prevention.

Warranties typically come in two parts: the manufacturer warranty (covers glass, frames, seals, and hardware per the manufacturer’s terms) and a contractor/installer warranty (covers workmanship and installation). Read both carefully for duration, transferability, and exclusions (hail, wind, improper maintenance are often excluded). Regular maintenance—cleaning weep holes, checking and re‑caulking exterior seals, and lubricating hardware—extends life and preserves warranty rights. After storm or hail damage, document damage with photos, contact your homeowner’s insurance, get multiple written estimates, and verify the chosen contractor will obtain required permits and inspections before work begins. Never sign a full‑payment contract before work is completed and inspected.
