Texas does not have a statewide roofing contractor license. That said, most reroofing and roof replacement projects in Austin require city building permits and inspections, and contractors are expected to comply with local building codes. Ask any contractor you hire to show proof they will obtain required City of Austin permits, carry applicable local business registrations, and follow code and inspection requirements.

Ask for a current certificate of insurance showing sufficient general liability coverage and confirm whether the contractor carries workers’ compensation (in Texas this is not mandatory, so absence of it can increase your liability risk). For storm claims, document the damage yourself, get multiple written estimates, notify your insurance company before work begins, and be wary of unsolicited storm-chasing contractors. Get all agreements in writing and don’t sign over insurance checks or pay the full amount until work is completed to your satisfaction.

A written contract should detail the scope of work, materials and product names, roof ventilation and decking work if applicable, start and completion dates, permit responsibilities, cleanup and disposal, payment schedule, and specific warranties. Manufacturer shingle warranties and installer/workmanship warranties are different—ask for written warranty terms and any maintenance or installation requirements that could affect coverage. Avoid large upfront payments, insist on lien waivers as progress payments are made, and check contractor references and local reviews before signing.
