Blue Haven Pools & Spas

Texas does not have a single statewide license specifically for pool builders, but most municipalities—including the City of San Antonio—require building permits and inspections for new in‑ground pools and major remodels. Trades such as electrical and plumbing must be performed by appropriately licensed contractors when required. Always ask a contractor to show proof of insurance, local registrations, references, and confirm that they will pull required permits and schedule inspections.

Costs vary widely depending on type (gunite/concrete, fiberglass, or vinyl liner), size, finishes and features (spa, decking, water features, automation), soil/utility conditions and HOA requirements. Typical ranges for basic to mid‑range in‑ground pools in the San Antonio area can span from roughly $30,000–$100,000+; vinyl tends to be least expensive, gunite most customizable and often higher cost. A standard build (excluding permitting) commonly takes 8–16 weeks; when you factor in permits, inspections, weather and custom work, the total project timeline is often 3–6 months. Get an itemized written estimate, clearly defined scope, payment schedule and change‑order process before signing.

Because San Antonio is hot and sunny much of the year, pools typically need regular attention: test sanitizer, pH and alkalinity 1–2 times per week, skim and clean baskets weekly, brush/vacuum as needed and follow the filter manufacturer's cleaning/backwash schedule. Salt chlorine generators are popular for residential pools because they reduce the need to handle chlorine, but they still require monitoring of salt level, pH and equipment corrosion considerations; traditional liquid or tablet chlorine is also effective. For energy savings and year‑round comfort consider a variable‑speed pump, high‑efficiency filter and a heat pump or solar cover; also use a pool cover to cut evaporation and chemical loss. If freezing weather is forecast (infrequent but possible), follow a winterizing plan recommended by your contractor to protect plumbing and equipment.
