Yes. In Texas, pesticide applicators and pest control businesses must be licensed and regulated by the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA). Ask any company you’re considering for their TDA license number, proof of training, and insurance. Licensed professionals must follow product label instructions and state rules for structural pest control; you can verify credentials with the TDA before hiring.

A clear written estimate or contract should list the target pests, the specific treatment methods (e.g., baits, exterior perimeter spray, traps, exclusion work), products to be used (EPA-registered), the service schedule and frequency, total price and payment terms, preparation and reentry instructions, the company’s re-treatment or guarantee policy, start date, cancellation terms, and the contractor’s license and insurance information. For termite work or longer-term warranties, ask how the guarantee is conditioned (annual inspections, paid maintenance, etc.).

Frequency depends on the pest and property conditions. In Houston’s hot, humid climate, many homeowners use monthly or quarterly general pest services for ants, cockroaches and spiders; mosquitoes may need weekly to biweekly attention during warm months; bed bugs and termites often require a defined multi-visit plan or annual inspections. Between visits, follow integrated pest management practices: remove standing water, fix leaks, store food in sealed containers, seal gaps and cracks, trim vegetation away from the house, keep mulch and firewood off the foundation, maintain screens and door sweeps, and keep garbage secured. These steps reduce attractants and make treatments more effective.
