Texas does not have a state-level flooring contractor license, though some cities and counties may require business registration or permits for certain remodeling work. Before hiring, verify the contractor carries general liability insurance and either workers' compensation or a clear exemption, ask for local references and recent project photos, and request a written contract that lists scope, materials, timeline, payment schedule, and warranty terms. Confirm who pulls any required City of Houston permits, insist on lien waivers as payments are made, and consider installers who are certified by manufacturers for the product you choose.

Houston's humid subtropical climate and occasional flooding make moisture resistance a primary concern. Waterproof options like luxury vinyl plank (LVP) and porcelain/ceramic tile perform well; engineered hardwood can be used in above‑grade, properly acclimated installations with moisture mitigation, but solid hardwood is riskier on a slab or in high‑humidity areas. Require the contractor to perform documented moisture testing (for example ASTM F1869 calcium chloride or ASTM F2170 in‑slab relative humidity tests), install appropriate vapor barriers or underlayments, and use flood‑tolerant products in basements, entryways, and other flood‑exposed zones.

Cost depends on material choice, labor, removal and disposal, subfloor repairs, moisture mitigation, room count, and pattern complexity; get a detailed written estimate that itemizes these elements. Small rooms can often be completed in a day or two, a whole house may take several days to weeks, and engineered/solid wood may require acclimation time before installation; material lead times or permit requirements can add delay. Payment practices vary, but expect a written contract with a reasonable deposit, payments tied to milestones (not full payment up front), clear change‑order procedures, final inspection/walkthrough, lien waivers on final payment, and written manufacturer and installer warranty information.
