Champion AC - Climate Magic

Yes. In Texas HVAC contractors must be registered with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR), and technicians who handle refrigerants should hold EPA Section 608 certification. Many cities, including San Antonio, also require permits and may have local registration or permitting procedures. Ask a contractor to provide their TDLR registration number, proof of insurance (general liability and workers’ compensation if applicable), EPA 608 card for technicians, and references. You can verify registration and file history on the TDLR website and check local building-permit records, online reviews, and the Better Business Bureau.

A qualified contractor should perform a Manual J load calculation (or equivalent) — not rely on rule-of-thumb tonnage — to size equipment for your home. Proper sizing avoids short cycling, humidity problems, and wasted energy; in San Antonio’s hot, humid climate it’s important to consider both cooling capacity and dehumidification. Ask about SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) ratings and local energy costs: higher SEER units are more efficient and generally make sense in Texas because of long cooling seasons, but weigh the upfront cost against expected energy savings. Also have the contractor inspect and evaluate your ductwork, insulation, attic ventilation, and airflow (CFM) since those affect performance and comfort.

Most permanent installations or major replacements require a building/mechanical permit and inspection from the City of San Antonio (or county), and licensed contractors normally obtain the permit. Timeline depends on scope: a straight equipment swap can often be done in one to two days; jobs that require duct modifications, electrical upgrades, or permit scheduling may take several days to a week. Cost varies widely based on system size, efficiency, ductwork condition, and any needed electrical or structural work — get multiple written, itemized estimates. Warranties are typically two parts: manufacturer warranties on components (compressors, coils, etc.) and a separate labor/installation warranty from the contractor; both terms vary, so get them in writing. Also ask about refrigerant type and handling, and check for available local utility rebates (e.g., CPS Energy) or federal incentives for high-efficiency equipment.
