Yes. In Texas HVAC contractors and technicians must meet state licensing/registration requirements administered by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR). Always ask for the contractor’s TDLR license or registration number, proof of general liability insurance (and workers’ compensation if applicable), and local business registration. For work in San Antonio, confirm they will pull required city permits and arrange inspections. You can verify licensing and look up consumer complaints on the TDLR website and check reviews or the Better Business Bureau.

Sizing should be based on a professional load calculation (commonly called Manual J) — not a rule of thumb based on square footage. An accurate calculation accounts for your home’s insulation, windows, orientation, occupancy, and the hot, humid climate in San Antonio. The contractor should also evaluate and size the ductwork (Manual D) and select equipment (Manual S) that matches the load. Proper sizing and good duct sealing prevent short‑cycling, improve humidity control, and increase efficiency. Ask for the load calculation and equipment recommendation in writing.

Schedule at least one professional inspection and tune‑up per year — ideally a cooling‑season check in spring for air conditioners and heat pumps (fall for heating if you have separate systems). Typical maintenance includes cleaning coils, checking refrigerant levels and airflow, inspecting electrical components, testing thermostats, clearing condensate drains, and verifying duct sealing. Change or clean filters regularly (every 1–3 months depending on filter type and home conditions). Ask contractors about service agreements, emergency response times, and whether older systems use phased‑out refrigerants (like R‑22), which can raise service costs.
