Possibly. Simple like‑for‑like window replacements that don’t change openings or structural elements sometimes qualify as “replacement” work and may have different permit requirements, but the City of Dallas enforces building and energy codes and may require a permit for work that changes opening size, affects egress, alters exterior finishes, or falls in a historic district. Always check with the City of Dallas Building Inspection/Permits office before work begins so installations meet local code, inspection, and energy‑efficiency requirements.

Look for windows that reduce solar heat gain and stand up to heat and occasional storms. Energy‑efficient features to consider include low‑E coatings, appropriate SHGC and U‑factor for your orientation, double‑pane glazing with argon or krypton fill, and well‑insulated frames. In areas prone to hail or high winds, consider impact‑rated or tempered glass and properly flashed installations to prevent water intrusion. Also ask about ENERGY STAR ratings, local utility rebates, and products that meet Dallas’s energy code requirements.

Texas does not have a statewide license specifically for window installers, but local permits, registrations and contractor requirements can apply — verify any City of Dallas registration or permit requirements. Ask for proof of general liability insurance and, if applicable, workers’ compensation; request local references and a portfolio of recent Dallas installs. Clarify warranties in writing: manufacturers typically warranty product defects while the installer should provide a written workmanship warranty and a clear contract with scope, timeline, payment terms, and who will obtain permits and handle disposal.
