Texas does not have a single statewide residential general‑contractor license, so there is no universal state license you can check for a “general contractor.” However, many individual trades (electrical, plumbing, HVAC, etc.) do require licenses or certifications, and some cities or municipalities have registration or permit requirements. In Houston you should confirm your contractor pulls required city permits and that any subcontractors are properly licensed for their trade.

Ask for a written contract that spells out scope, schedule, payment milestones, change‑order process and warranties. Verify the contractor carries general liability insurance (request a current Certificate of Insurance), and check whether they have workers’ compensation or a documented waiver so you aren’t exposed to payroll claims. Check references and recent local work, confirm who will pull permits and handle inspections, get lien‑release language for final payment, and make sure they have experience with Houston‑area issues (high humidity, mold control, wind‑resistant roofing and flashings, and any floodplain or elevation requirements).

Permits and inspections are usually required for structural, electrical, plumbing, mechanical and roofing work in the City of Houston; contractors commonly pull permits on behalf of the homeowner, but this should be stated in the contract. Inspections are performed by the city at specified stages—keep copies of passed inspection reports. For insurance, require the contractor’s general liability policy and a Certificate of Insurance; confirm whether the contractor has workers’ compensation or how subcontractor coverage is handled. Failure to obtain permits or adequate insurance can cause problems with homeowner insurance claims and resale, so get these responsibilities in writing.
