EcoView Windows & Doors

Texas does not have a single statewide license specifically for most residential window and door contractors, but that does not mean there are no rules. Many cities and counties (including permitting requirements in Houston) require building permits for installations that change opening sizes or structural members, and coastal areas have additional windstorm rules. Always ask a contractor to provide proof of general liability insurance, workers’ compensation or an explanation if they do not carry it, local registrations or permits they will pull, references, and a written contract before work begins.

Choose products rated for the climate and for wind exposure where you live. For hurricane-prone or high-wind areas near the coast, impact-rated or code-approved windows and doors and properly tested hardware are recommended; ask for the product’s third‑party test reports or local approval documentation. For Houston’s hot, humid climate, look for energy-efficient features such as Low‑E coatings, quality thermal breaks, and appropriate U‑factor and solar heat gain characteristics for the southern climate (ENERGY STAR-qualified products for the South are a good reference). Equally important is proper installation—correct flashing, sealing and water-management details are critical to prevent leaks and condensation regardless of product type.

You’ll usually get two separate types of protection: a manufacturer warranty covering material defects (glass seal failures, hardware defects, frame finish) and an installer’s warranty covering workmanship and installation. Warranty terms and what is covered vary, so get them in writing and know who to contact for each issue. Regular maintenance—cleaning weep holes, lubricating hardware, and checking seals and caulking—extends life and preserves warranty coverage. For storm damage, contact your homeowner insurer promptly and keep documentation; reputable contractors can provide estimates and help with code‑upgrade requirements, but be cautious about assignments of benefits and always keep the claim in your name. Ensure all work complies with local permit requirements, since lack of permits can affect insurance and resale.
