Element Pool Company

Texas does not have a single statewide license specifically for residential pool builders; requirements vary by city and by trade (electrical and plumbing often require licensed contractors). In San Antonio, builders must pull the required building permits and follow local code—ask your contractor for copies of permits and final inspection records. Also request proof of general liability insurance, workers’ compensation or subcontractor coverage, references, and any staff certifications (for example, Certified Pool Operator (CPO) or training from the Association of Pool & Spa Professionals) so you can verify experience and professionalism.

Typical timelines vary by scope: a new in-ground gunite pool generally takes 8–16 weeks from permit to completion; fiberglass shells can be quicker, and smaller remodels or equipment-only upgrades often finish in a few weeks. Plan extra time for design, HOA approval (if applicable), city permit review, utility locates, and inspections—heavy rain or extreme heat can also cause delays. Before work begins confirm that the contractor will pull all required City of San Antonio permits, submit required inspections, and coordinate any grading, drainage, or flood-plain requirements.

San Antonio’s hot summers and high evaporation increase water loss, chemical demand, and algae risk, so expect more frequent testing (often 2–3 times per week in peak season) and regular circulation. Energy-efficient equipment—variable-speed pumps, properly sized filtration, and automated controllers—reduces operating cost and helps meet local energy ordinances. Discuss sanitizer options (traditional chlorine vs. salt systems), heater choice if you want year-round use, and a maintenance plan covering water chemistry, filter cleaning, and winter/freeze protection for plumbing during rare cold snaps. Also confirm local safety requirements (barriers, gates, alarms) and consider a cover to cut evaporation and chemical use.
