Texas does not have a single statewide roofing license, but that does not mean there are no requirements. Materials that perform well in Central Texas resist heat/UV, heavy rain, hail and high winds. Common options: asphalt shingles (choose higher wind- and impact-rated products), metal roofing (reflective, long-lived, good wind performance), and clay or concrete tile (durable, heat-resistant). Look for products with appropriate wind ratings, Class 3 or 4 impact resistance if hail is a concern, and good solar reflectance if you want lower attic temperatures. Proper attic ventilation and insulation are equally important to extend roof life and improve home comfort. Ask contractors to provide manufacturer specifications and local performance history rather than relying on brand claims alone.

First document the damage with photos and protect interior areas from further water intrusion. Notify your insurance company as soon as possible to start a claim. Get written estimates from two or three reputable local contractors; contractors can assist with the claims process but avoid signing over your insurance benefits without understanding the implications. Verify contractors are properly insured, provide a detailed scope of work, will pull required permits, and issue lien releases as work is completed. Be cautious of out-of-area “storm chasers” and check the Texas Department of Insurance website or local consumer resources for guidance if you have disputes.
