Exclusive Windows and Doors Houston

Texas does not have a single statewide license specific to window and door installers the way some trades (electricians, plumbers) are licensed. However, some cities or municipalities may require contractor registration or permits, and reputable contractors will carry business licenses, general liability insurance, and may be bonded. To verify a contractor: ask for proof of current insurance (general liability and workers’ compensation if applicable), request local registration or permit history for past jobs, check references and online ratings, verify any manufacturer installer certifications they claim with the manufacturer, and get a written contract. Also confirm who will pull required building permits and that the contractor provides lien waivers and documentation when jobs are completed.

For Houston’s hot‑humid climate prioritize products that reduce solar heat gain and control humidity: look for NFRC ratings (U‑factor and SHGC) and ENERGY STAR products qualified for the hot‑humid region, low‑E coatings and insulated (double‑pane) glass with argon or krypton fills, and thermally efficient frame materials (vinyl, fiberglass, composite). If you are in a wind‑prone or coastal area or want extra protection during storms, consider impact‑rated windows and doors or hurricane shutters — check local code requirements because some zones have specific windborne debris rules. Proper installation (flashing, water‑resistive barriers, correct sealing) is as important as product choice for energy performance and preventing water intrusion.

Expect the need for permits when work changes openings, structural elements, or in jurisdictions that require inspections; many contractors will pull permits for you but confirm in writing. Typical process: site measurement and templating, ordering (lead times can be several weeks to months for custom units), removal of old units, rough framing/flashings as needed, installation, sealing/trim and cleanup, and final inspection if a permit was pulled. Insist on a written contract that details scope, materials, start and completion dates, payment schedule, and who is responsible for permits and disposal. Understand warranties: manufacturers usually provide product warranties that cover glass/frame defects for specified periods, while installers may offer separate workmanship warranties covering installation issues; read both for exclusions (seal failure, normal wear, finishing). Also request lien waivers and documentation of completed inspections to protect your property from mechanic’s liens.
