EZ Air Conditioning & Heating

Yes. HVAC contractors and technicians working in Texas should be registered or licensed with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) and technicians who handle refrigerants must hold EPA Section 608 certification. Ask for the contractor’s TDLR registration/license number and verify it on the TDLR website. Also confirm the contractor carries general liability insurance and appropriate worker coverage, and that they will obtain required local permits and inspections (for example, the City of San Antonio typically requires permits for system replacements and major installations). Request proof of insurance and written confirmation that permits will be pulled.

Get at least three written estimates and make sure each quote includes a Manual J load calculation (right-sizing), the exact equipment make/model and its SEER efficiency rating, the refrigerant type, details on any required ductwork or electrical upgrades, labor and permit costs, and both manufacturer and contractor workmanship warranty terms in writing. Because San Antonio has long, hot, humid summers, proper sizing and good ductwork sealing are critical for comfort and efficiency. Also ask about expected seasonal energy use, available local utility rebates (for example from CPS Energy) or tax incentives, and whether the installer is experienced with the chosen equipment and refrigerant (note R‑22 is phased out and most new systems use R‑410A or newer low‑GWP refrigerants).

Schedule service at least twice a year — a spring tune‑up for the cooling season and a fall check for heating — and change disposable filters as recommended (often every 1–3 months). A standard maintenance visit should include checking refrigerant levels and for leaks, cleaning coils and condensate drains, inspecting and tightening electrical connections, testing blower and airflow, checking thermostat calibration, and inspecting ductwork and system safety controls. Regular maintenance improves efficiency, reduces breakdowns, helps preserve manufacturer warranties, and extends equipment life; ask the contractor about a written maintenance plan or service agreement and keep records of all work performed.
