Floor Coverings International of Houston Heights

Texas does not have a single statewide licensing program specifically for flooring installers. Some types of construction work (structural changes, certain trades) may require licensed contractors or permits, and local jurisdictions can have their own registration requirements. In Houston, check with the City of Houston Permitting Center if your project needs a permit. Regardless of license requirements, always ask a contractor for a written contract, proof of general liability insurance, worker’s compensation status (Texas employers may opt out of workers’ comp), references, and photos of recent work.

Because Houston is hot and humid and can be prone to flooding, choose moisture-resistant or dimensionally-stable products for many areas. Good options include porcelain/ceramic tile, luxury vinyl plank (LVP) or tile, and engineered hardwood (better than solid hardwood for humidity). Natural stone and sealed concrete also perform well in humid climates. Solid hardwood can be used but requires proper acclimation, installation with expansion gaps, and careful moisture control. For basements or areas at risk of flooding, prioritize waterproof materials and moisture mitigation. Ask contractors to perform moisture testing of subfloors and to recommend suitable underlayment or vapor barriers.

Get a detailed written contract that lists scope of work, materials (brand/grade), square footage, start and completion dates, payment schedule, cleanup and disposal of old flooring, and a change-order policy. Ask the contractor about subfloor inspection and repairs, moisture testing results and mitigation steps, manufacturer warranties and the installer’s workmanship guarantee, proof of insurance, and a list of references or recent local projects. Prepare your home by clearing furniture, securing pets, and maintaining indoor temperature/humidity as recommended for proper acclimation. Understand cost drivers—materials, subfloor repair, trim, thresholds, removal, and labor—so you can compare bids accurately.
