Floor Inspirations

Texas does not issue a statewide flooring contractor license for general floor installation. However, contractors should carry appropriate business registrations and insurance (general liability and, where applicable, workers’ compensation) and comply with any local city requirements or permitting. For specialized work—such as asbestos abatement, major structural changes, or certain mechanical trades—licensed professionals are required. Always ask a contractor for proof of insurance, local permits (if any), references, and a written contract before work begins.

Houston’s heat and high humidity make moisture resistance and dimensional stability primary concerns. Water-resistant options such as ceramic or porcelain tile, luxury vinyl plank (LVP), and quality engineered hardwood or laminate designed for high-moisture environments perform better than solid hardwood in humid areas. Proper installation practices are equally important: test concrete slab moisture, allow wood products to acclimate, use appropriate vapor barriers/underlayments, maintain proper expansion gaps, and choose adhesives or products rated for high humidity to minimize warping, cupping, and mold risk.

Project length varies by scope: a single room or small area can often be completed in a day or two, while a whole-house installation including subfloor repairs, transitions, and trim can take several days to a couple of weeks. Time factors include removal of existing flooring, subfloor preparation, drying or curing times for adhesives and grout, and manufacturer-recommended acclimation. Ask for a written timeline in the contract, confirm what prep and cleanup the contractor will handle (furniture removal, disposal), and follow post-install care instructions (e.g., keeping temperature/humidity stable, wait times before replacing furniture or exposing floors to water) to protect your new floor and any product warranties.
