Flooring Services

Texas does not have a statewide license specifically for flooring installers. That said, contractors should be properly registered businesses and able to provide proof of general liability insurance and, if applicable, workers’ compensation coverage. Local rules can vary: check City of Houston and county requirements for business registration or permits, and confirm whether any structural, electrical, or plumbing work associated with the job will require licensed trade contractors. Always verify references, view examples of completed work, and get a written contract before work begins.

Houston’s hot, humid climate and occasional flooding make moisture management the primary concern. Use materials and installation methods suited for high humidity and slab-on-grade concrete when applicable: engineered hardwood, tile, and luxury vinyl plank (LVP) are more stable than solid hardwood over concrete. Require moisture testing (for example, manufacturer-recommended slab tests or in-situ relative humidity tests) and a written plan to address elevated moisture (vapor barriers, appropriate adhesives, or moisture mitigation systems). Allow for proper acclimation of natural wood products, provide expansion gaps, and choose water-resistant products for basements, bathrooms, laundry areas, or first floors in flood-prone neighborhoods.

Get a detailed written contract that lists scope of work, specific materials (brand, color, thickness), installation method, subfloor preparation and moisture testing results, start and completion dates, payment schedule, cleanup and disposal responsibilities, and how change orders will be handled. Ask for copies of the contractor’s general liability insurance and information on workers’ compensation status. Confirm who will obtain required permits and inspections. Insist on manufacturer and installer warranty information in writing and request lien releases or conditional/unconditional waiver forms upon final payment because contractors in Texas can file mechanic’s liens. Avoid paying the full amount up front and keep final payment until you verify the job is complete per the contract.
