Floors Etc.

Texas does not have a statewide license specifically for flooring contractors. Local requirements can vary: some cities require business registration, trade permits, or building permits for certain remodel work, so check with the City of Houston Permitting Center before work begins. Regardless of licensing, always ask for proof of general liability insurance and, if applicable, workers' compensation; verify references and written estimates, and get a detailed contract before work starts.

Expect the scope to determine timing: a single room can take a day or two, while whole-house jobs often take several days to a couple of weeks. You’ll need to clear furniture and pets; many contractors offer removal and disposal of old flooring but confirm in writing. For wood products, installers often require acclimation time on-site; subfloor preparation and moisture mitigation can add time. Get a written contract with scope, materials, timeline, cleanup details, payment schedule (reasonable deposit, progress payments, final payment on completion), and written change-order procedures.

Because Houston is hot and humid, choose moisture-tolerant products: ceramic/porcelain tile, luxury vinyl plank (LVP), waterproof vinyl, and engineered hardwood are generally better choices than solid hardwood in moist areas. Reputable installers perform moisture testing on concrete subfloors (common tests include in-situ relative humidity ASTM F2170 and calcium chloride ASTM F1869) and install appropriate vapor barriers or moisture mitigation systems when needed. Ask how the installer will prep the subfloor, what moisture limits they follow, whether adhesives or underlayments are rated for high humidity, and what manufacturer and installer warranties cover installation and material performance.
