Foster Exteriors Window Company

Texas does not require a single statewide residential license specifically for window and door installers, but contractors should be properly registered businesses and carry liability insurance. Many installers operate under a licensed general contractor or specialty trade registration where applicable. The City of Dallas typically requires building permits for window or door work that changes structural openings, affects egress, or occurs in certain historic districts — even some full replacement jobs require permits. Always ask your contractor for proof of insurance, business registration, references, and confirm permit requirements with the City of Dallas Building Inspections before work begins.

Dallas is a hot, humid climate, so prioritize products that reduce solar heat gain and limit air leakage. Look for windows with low U‑factor for insulation, and low Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) or a suitable low‑E coating on south/west exposures. Double‑pane insulated glass with argon or krypton fill and thermally efficient frames (vinyl, fiberglass, or clad wood) are common choices. Proper flashing and professional installation are as important as the product to prevent leaks and improve performance. Check ENERGY STAR ratings and select products rated for the hot‑humid/southern climate zone, and ask the contractor for performance labels (U‑factor, SHGC, air leakage).

Timing depends on scope: a single window replacement often takes a few hours, while a full‑house window replacement typically takes several days to a week; exterior doors and custom units may take longer and include lead time for ordering. Expect two written items: a detailed estimate/timeline from the contractor and a written warranty. Warranties usually come in two parts — manufacturer warranty for glass, frame and hardware (terms vary by maker) and a contractor or installer labor warranty for workmanship. Ask for the warranty in writing, clarify what is excluded (glass breakage, improper maintenance, seal failure, finishes), whether it is transferable, and how warranty service is handled. Also confirm that permitted work will be inspected and the permit closed when finished.
