Gary Pools

Yes. Most new pools, major remodels, and some equipment changes require a building permit from the City of San Antonio and must meet local building and safety codes (including pool barrier/fence requirements, gates, and setbacks). The installation may also need electrical and plumbing permits and inspections. Your contractor should know local permitting requirements and either pull the permits themselves or tell you how to obtain them; always verify a permit was issued and inspections completed before final payment. Also remember to call 811 before digging to locate underground utilities.

Ask for proof of general liability insurance and, if applicable, workers’ compensation. Confirm any required local registrations and that subcontracted trades (electrician, plumber) are properly licensed in Texas. Get written, itemized estimates and a clear contract that lists scope, timeline, payment schedule, change-order process, and manufacturer warranties for equipment. Ask for references and recent project photos, check online reviews and the Better Business Bureau, and verify they will pull permits and follow local codes. Be cautious of very low bids and always obtain lien waivers and final inspection sign-off.

San Antonio’s hot summers increase evaporation, chemical demand, and pump run-time, so expect regular chemical balancing, skimming, filter cleaning/backwashing, and periodic equipment checks. Hard water and minerals common in Texas can cause scale buildup, so test calcium hardness and use treatment as needed. Storms and heavy rains may require additional cleaning and shock treatments. Consider energy-efficient equipment (variable-speed pumps, efficient heaters) to reduce operating costs; note federal efficiency standards affect pool pumps. Ask your contractor for a recommended maintenance schedule, training on basic care, and options for seasonal measures (covers or temporary winterizing) to protect equipment during rare freezes.
