Gary Pools

Yes — most new in-ground pools and major remodels require city permits, inspections and adherence to local building and safety codes. Texas does not have a single statewide swimming-pool contractor license, so verify that the company pulls required permits and that any subcontractors (plumbers, electricians) hold the appropriate Texas licenses for their trades. Also ask to see proof of the contractor’s general liability insurance, workers’ compensation (if they carry it), written contracts, and references from recent local jobs.

Timelines and costs vary widely. Typical in-ground pool projects in the region often take several weeks to a few months from permit approval to completion; factors that extend time include permitting, site access, soil conditions, custom features (waterfalls, decking, heaters, automation), and busy seasons. Price depends on pool type (vinyl, fiberglass, gunite/concrete), size, finishes, equipment, and site work; get multiple detailed, written estimates that list scope, change-order procedures, payment schedule and warranty information for structure and equipment.

San Antonio’s hot, humid summers increase water evaporation, chemical use and debris loading, so routine maintenance is important: test and adjust sanitizer (chlorine or salt system), pH and alkalinity weekly (or use a service), clean/ backwash filters per manufacturer recommendations, and monitor water level and equipment performance. Winters are mild compared with northern climates, so full winterization is often less critical, but if you leave a pool unused for months protect the equipment, maintain chemical balance and consider a cover to reduce evaporation and algae growth. Ask your contractor about energy-efficient equipment (variable-speed pumps, LED lighting) and a recommended maintenance schedule tailored to local conditions.
