Houston Flooring Warehouse

Texas does not require a statewide license specifically for flooring contractors, but local cities or counties may have registration or permit requirements. Verify a contractor by asking for a written contract and estimate, proof of general liability insurance and workers' compensation (if they have employees), references and recent project photos, and any manufacturer training or installer qualifications for the product you choose. Also check local reviews, the Better Business Bureau, and ask whether they pull required permits for related work. If a home is older, ask about experience with asbestos testing and remediation for old vinyl tile or adhesives.

A typical process: site measurement and written estimate; removal of existing flooring; inspection and repair of the subfloor or concrete slab; moisture testing (see ASTM F2170 or ASTM F1869 methods for slab testing) and any needed mitigation; material acclimation (commonly 48–72 hours for wood products); installation; trim/transition installation and cleanup. Time depends on material and scope — a single room can be finished in a day or two, a whole house can take several days to a few weeks, and extensive subfloor repairs or moisture mitigation add time. Ask the contractor for a project timeline in the contract and whether permits or special inspections will be needed for your city or county.

Because Houston has high humidity and many homes have concrete slabs, choose materials that tolerate moisture: porcelain or ceramic tile, luxury vinyl plank (LVP) or waterproof vinyl, and engineered hardwood (prefer over solid hardwood on slabs). Solid hardwood performs best over wood subfloors. Always require a moisture test of the slab before installation; if levels are high, contractors may recommend moisture barriers, vapor retarders, or specialized adhesives and mitigation systems. Ensure installers follow manufacturer moisture and acclimation requirements — failure to do so can cause cupping, buckling, or void warranties. For older homes, consider asbestos testing before removing old resilient flooring.
