Texas does not issue a statewide roofing contractor license the way some states do, so you may not see a single state “roofing license.” That said, contractors still must follow building codes, carry required insurance, obtain local permits, and comply with city or county registration rules where applicable. Always ask a roofer for proof of general liability insurance, written references or examples of local jobs, a current business registration, and for confirmation that they will obtain any required Houston permits and inspections for your project.

There isn’t one “best” material—choose based on budget, roof structure and the local climate (hot, humid summers, strong sun, occasional hail and high winds). Architectural asphalt shingles widely used in Houston are cost-effective and available in high‑wind and impact‑resistant grades; metal roofs shed water and reflect heat for energy savings; tile or slate are durable but heavier and may require framing upgrades. Whatever you choose, look for products rated for wind/hail, proper ventilation and attic insulation to reduce heat stress, and manufacturer wind/impact ratings that meet local code and insurance requirements.

Start by documenting damage with photos and contacting your insurer promptly. Get at least one detailed written estimate from a reputable local roofer and keep records of all communications. Ask the contractor whether they have experience working with insurance adjusters, whether they will obtain permits and inspections, for a written contract listing scope, materials, timeline, cleanup and warranties (manufacturer vs. workmanship), proof of liability insurance, and a process for lien waivers. Beware of unsolicited “storm-chaser” contractors, don’t sign away your insurance rights without understanding an assignment‑of‑benefits, and confirm any repairs meet local code so the insurer and future buyers will accept them.
