I-Window Remodeling

Texas does not have a single statewide residential license specifically for window and door installers the way some states do. However, local rules and permit requirements vary — many cities (including Houston) require permits for replacements that change openings or affect structure, and some municipalities register or require contractors to show proof of insurance. Always ask a contractor to provide proof of general liability insurance and worker’s compensation (or a signed waiver), local permit handling, references from recent Houston-area jobs, and a written contract that lists products, scope, timelines and payment terms. If you’re unsure about local requirements, check with the City of Houston Permitting Center before work begins.

Houston’s coastal location exposes homes to heavy storms and occasional hurricane-force winds, so choose products rated for wind loads in your area. Look for windows and doors that are impact‑rated or have documented design pressure/wind-load ratings, and ask for product approval paperwork or third‑party test reports. In designated windstorm regions, certain approvals are required for insurance purposes — confirm whether your property falls under those rules. Equally important is proper installation: correct anchoring, flashing and sealing to the structural opening greatly affect performance in high winds. If impact units aren’t desired, consider shutters or storm doors as supplemental protection.

Yes — properly selected and installed windows and doors can reduce cooling costs in Houston’s hot, humid climate, though savings depend on product quality and installation. Key things to check are NFRC-rated performance values (U‑factor for heat transfer and SHGC for solar heat gain) and whether the product has low‑E coatings, multiple panes with inert gas fills (argon), and tight weatherstripping. For Houston, lower SHGC and good solar control are important to reduce heat gain. ENERGY STAR has criteria by climate zone (look for products qualified for hot‑humid climates). Equally critical is professional installation with correct flashing and air sealing to prevent leaks and moisture problems. Also ask about manufacturer and installer warranties, and check with your local utility or tax advisor about any rebates or incentives before purchasing.
