J&L Luxury Flooring Houston

Texas does not have a statewide license specifically for flooring contractors the way it does for electricians or plumbers. However, local rules can apply — some cities or counties require business registration, permits, or contractor registration for certain jobs. In Houston, check the City of Houston permit requirements for your project. Regardless of licensing, always ask for current general liability insurance, proof of business registration, references and written estimates, and verify whether any subcontractors are used and how they are insured.

Houston’s heat and high humidity increase the risk of cupping, warping and mold if moisture isn’t managed. Moisture-tolerant choices include porcelain/ceramic tile, luxury vinyl plank (LVP), waterproof vinyl, and properly installed engineered hardwood. Solid hardwood is more sensitive and requires careful acclimation (typically 48–72 hours) and humidity control. For installations over concrete slabs, require moisture testing (common methods include calcium chloride tests or in‑situ relative humidity tests per ASTM F1869/F2170) and install appropriate vapor barriers or moisture mitigation if levels are high. Proper underlayment, adhesives rated for humid environments, and attention to ventilation will reduce problems in Houston’s climate.

Small rooms can often be completed in a day or two; a whole‑house job typically takes several days to a couple of weeks depending on square footage and complexity. Expect additional costs for removal and disposal of existing flooring, subfloor repairs or leveling, moisture mitigation on concrete slabs, new thresholds or transition strips, trim/baseboard replacement, stairs, moving furniture, and any required permits. Manufacturer warranties cover materials while contractors may offer a separate workmanship warranty — get all warranties, scope of work, timeline, payment schedule and cleanup responsibilities in a written contract before work begins.
