Also request references, ask about manufacturer training or industry certifications (for example, CPO or PHTA-related training), and verify complaints or ratings with local consumer protection, the Better Business Bureau, or online review sources.

Houston’s hot, humid, long swimming season increases evaporation and chemical demand, so expect higher routine chemical and water use than in cooler climates. Frequent heavy rain and high humidity raise algae and debris issues and can spike water chemistry fluctuations after storms. Many Houston yards have high groundwater and expansive clay soils—this can affect structural design, drainage and backfill plans, and may increase risk of movement or floatation for certain pool types; proper engineering and drainage are important. Ask contractors about recommending variable-speed pumps (energy-efficient), proper equipment placement above expected flood levels, good filtration and circulation, automatic covers to reduce evaporation, and a maintenance plan tuned to local conditions.

A clear written contract should list scope of work, materials and equipment by brand and model, precise start and projected completion dates with allowances for weather, detailed payment schedule (deposit, progress payments, final payment), and how change orders are handled. It should state who is responsible for permits and inspections, provide proof of insurance, and require final municipal sign-offs. Warranties vary—equipment (pumps, heaters, heaters, filters) typically carry manufacturer warranties, while labor and workmanship warranties are offered by contractors and vary in length; structural/shell warranties differ by builder. Ask for written warranty terms, what is covered vs. excluded, and request lien waivers and a final inspection checklist before final payment.
