Texas does not have a statewide roofing contractor license. Instead, licensing and registration rules are set by cities and counties, so requirements can vary. Look for visible signs such as missing or cracked shingles, dented metal components (gutters, vents, flashing, AC units), excessive granules in gutters or downspouts, curling or split shingles, and interior water stains or leaks. Photograph all damage and keep records of the storm date. Have two or three reputable local roofers inspect the roof and provide written estimates; if you file an insurance claim, coordinate inspections with your insurer and be cautious of high-pressure “storm-chaser” contractors. A good contract should list the full scope of work, specific materials (brand, style, grade/impact rating), underlayment, ventilation and flashing details, who will obtain permits, estimated start and completion dates, cleanup and disposal plans, and written warranties (manufacturer’s material warranty and the contractor’s workmanship warranty). The payment schedule should be milestone-based (not a large upfront cash demand) and you should require lien waivers as work is paid. Also get proof of insurance and a copy of the permit/inspection sign-off before making final payment, and keep all estimates and contracts in writing.
