Ask to see a business registration, current general liability insurance certificate and proof of workers’ compensation if they carry it; also check references, online reviews and any city contractor registration or complaint history.

The contract should list the full scope of work (remove or overlay, layers to be removed), specific materials (brand, product line, color), warranty information (manufacturer vs. contractor workmanship), permit and inspection responsibilities, start and completion dates, disposal and cleanup plans, price breakdown and any allowances, change-order process, and a clear payment schedule with final payment contingent on completed work and lien waivers. Having everything in writing reduces disputes and helps with insurance or warranty claims.

Central Texas sees intense sun/UV, heat, severe thunderstorms, hail and high winds, so choose materials rated for those conditions (proper wind rating, impact-resistant/class-rated shingles where appropriate, and UV-resistant underlayments). Good attic ventilation, proper flashing and fasteners, and adequate roof slope/drainage are important to control heat and prevent moisture damage. After major storms get a documented inspection for wind and hail damage and keep records for insurance; also check local building codes and any available energy-efficiency programs (for example, cool-roof incentives) before selecting materials.
