Longs Windows

It depends on the scope of the work. Like-for-like replacements that do not change the size of the opening or alter structural elements sometimes don’t need a building permit, but projects that enlarge openings, change egress, alter load-bearing walls, or add new exterior doors usually do. Fort Worth enforces the local building and energy codes, so check with the City of Fort Worth Building Inspections Division or have your contractor pull permits. A reputable contractor will tell you when a permit is required and handle the permit process.

Fort Worth has hot summers, strong sun, and occasional severe storms, so prioritize thermal performance, solar control, and durable materials. Look for NFRC-rated products (U‑factor, SHGC, and air leakage) and consider low‑E coatings and insulated (double- or triple‑pane) glass with gas fills to reduce heat gain and lower cooling costs. ENERGY STAR-rated products appropriate for your Texas climate zone are a good baseline. Choose durable frame materials (vinyl, fiberglass, or properly finished wood-clad) and ensure proper flashing and weatherproof installation to prevent air and water infiltration during heavy rain. Impact glass or storm-rated protection may be appropriate in higher wind or hail-prone situations; discuss local risk with the contractor. Also ask about tempered glass where building code requires it (near doors, baths, and egress paths).

Verify the contractor’s insurance (general liability and, if applicable, workers’ compensation), request local references and recent project photos, and check reviews and any complaints with the City and the Better Business Bureau. Get a detailed written estimate that lists products (brand, model), NFRC ratings, materials, the installation method (full-frame vs. retrofit), who pulls permits, project timeline, cleanup/disposal, and warranty details (manufacturer and workmanship). Confirm who is responsible for code compliance and final inspections, and avoid large upfront cash payments—use a written contract with clear payment milestones and lien- release procedures.
