Luxury pool builders

Texas does not have a single statewide license titled “swimming pool contractor,” but any contractor who performs regulated trades (electrical, plumbing, gas) must use properly licensed subcontractors where required. Verify qualifications by asking for: proof of general liability insurance and workers’ compensation (or an exemption), a current business registration, references and recent project photos, and written contracts with scope, timeline and payment schedule. Look for industry credentials (for example, Certified Pool/Spa Operator or manufacturer-authorized installer) and confirm the contractor pulls required local permits and inspections.

You should expect the contractor to obtain local building permits and arrange required inspections for structural work, electrical, plumbing and gas connections. Houston and nearby cities/counties have their own codes—many require safety barriers or pool fences, self-closing gates, and electrical grounding/GFCI protection. If your property is in a floodplain or has high groundwater, additional design reviews, elevation requirements or special drainage measures may be required. Always ask the contractor to confirm which permits they will pull and to provide copies of permits and final inspection sign-offs.

Houston’s hot, humid climate and heavy rainfall increase evaporation, chemical consumption and algae risk, so circulation, filtration and a tailored maintenance plan are important. Local soils often include expansive clay and a high water table in some areas; those conditions can cause shifting, buoyancy and cracking if the shell and drainage aren’t designed for them. Good contractors address this with proper site drainage, hydrostatic relief, reinforced shell design, elevated equipment pads and corrosion-resistant materials (important around salt systems and coastal areas). Also plan for hurricane-season considerations—secure equipment, consider automatic covers or water-level management, and expect more frequent chemical and equipment checks during the summer months.
