M&G Custom Flooring

There is no single statewide license specifically for flooring contractors in Texas, but local requirements and permits can vary. In Houston you should: verify the contractor is a registered business, ask for proof of general liability insurance (and workers’ comp or evidence it’s carried by subcontractors if applicable), check references and photos of recent jobs, get a written estimate and detailed contract (scope, materials, timeline, payment schedule), and request information about manufacturer and installer warranties. Also confirm whether any local permits or city registrations are required for your project and ask for lien waivers as final payment protections (Texas allows contractors to file mechanics’ liens).

Houston’s heat and high humidity favor stable, moisture-resistant products. Popular choices are luxury vinyl plank (waterproof), porcelain or ceramic tile, and engineered hardwood (more stable than solid hardwood). Solid hardwood is more prone to cupping and gapping unless careful acclimation and humidity control are maintained. Good contractors will perform moisture testing (concrete slab moisture tests or relative humidity probes), install appropriate vapor barriers or moisture mitigation systems, use suitable underlayment, allow materials to acclimate to indoor conditions before installation, and leave required expansion gaps. In flood-prone or ground-level areas, choose waterproof materials like vinyl or tile and discuss elevated installation techniques and flood-recovery options.

Timeline depends on material and scope: replacing a single room with vinyl or tile can often be completed in 1–3 days; engineered hardwood or full-site installations may require several days to a week, plus additional days for acclimation and, if site-finished, sanding and curing. Prep work (furniture removal, subfloor repairs, transitions, baseboard or door trimming) can add time. Expect noise, dust (especially with sanding), and limited access to areas during work. Costs vary with material, subfloor repairs, pattern complexity, and disposal of old materials. Simple interior flooring replacements typically do not require a building permit, but structural changes, altering stairs, or adding new subfloors can trigger permit requirements — check with the City of Houston Permitting Center. Always get a written contract, a clear payment schedule, and confirm warranty details for both materials and workmanship.
