Metro Flooring

Texas does not issue a statewide professional license specifically for flooring contractors the way it does for electricians or plumbers. That said, contractors should be properly registered as a business, carry appropriate insurance, and comply with any local requirements — some cities or counties may require permits or contractor registration for work that affects structure or requires inspections. Always ask for a written contract, check local permitting needs with the City of Houston when applicable, and verify insurance (general liability and a Certificate of Insurance) and references before hiring.

Houston’s high humidity and occasional flooding affect material selection and installation methods. Moisture can cause solid hardwood to cup, warp, or gap, so consider engineered hardwood, tile, or waterproof luxury vinyl plank in moisture-prone areas; follow manufacturer recommendations for acclimation. Require pre-installation moisture testing of subfloors (relative humidity probes, moisture meters or calcium chloride tests) and appropriate moisture mitigation (vapor barriers, moisture-tolerant adhesives, or primers) when needed. Installers should leave recommended expansion gaps, use proper underlayment, and advise on maintenance to minimize climate-related issues.

A complete written estimate/contract should list scope of work, specific materials (brand, style, grade, amounts), installation method, subfloor preparation or repairs, results of moisture testing and any remediation, start and completion dates, a clear payment schedule and change-order process, who is responsible for permits and disposal, and details on warranties (manufacturer vs. installer). Also request proof of general liability insurance and any applicable business registration, and include a provision for lien releases upon final payment. Avoid large unexplained upfront payments and get everything in writing before work begins.
