Mr.Windows of Houston

Texas does not require a statewide license specifically for residential window installers, but requirements can vary by city or county. In the Houston area, verify the contractor’s local registration (if required), ask for proof of current general liability insurance, and request workers’ compensation information if applicable. Look for manufacturer training or third-party installation training (for example, AAMA installation programs) and check references, recent project photos, and online reviews. Always get a written contract that lists scope of work, materials, timeline, payment schedule, and who will pull permits and handle inspections.

Permitting rules depend on the scope of work and local rules. In Houston, you typically need a permit when you change the size of an opening, modify structural members, or alter the building envelope; many jurisdictions also require permits and inspections for replacement windows even if the opening isn’t changed. Homeowners should check with the Houston Permitting Center and their HOA (if applicable). A reputable contractor will tell you if a permit is required and can pull the permit and schedule inspections on your behalf; confirm that this is included in the written contract.

Choose windows with NFRC ratings and ENERGY STAR labeling appropriate for a hot, humid climate — pay attention to U‑factor (insulation) and SHGC (solar heat gain); in Houston you’ll generally want a lower SHGC to reduce cooling load and a reasonable U‑factor for whole‑house comfort. Look for Low‑E coatings and insulated (double or triple) glass with argon or similar gas fills and quality spacer systems. If you live in coastal or high‑wind areas of the region, consider impact‑rated or windstorm‑approved products and installation methods that meet local wind-resistance requirements (insurance and local permitting may require them). Finally, verify both the manufacturer’s warranty for materials and a workmanship warranty from the installer, and confirm proper flashing and water‑management details to prevent leaks in heavy rain.
