Permit requirements vary. Simple like‑for‑like window replacements that do not change the size of the opening or alter structural framing sometimes do not require a permit, but replacements that enlarge openings, change egress, affect structural members, or involve exterior wall work typically do. Local rules and code interpretations differ, so check with the City of Fort Worth Building Inspections before work begins. A professional installer should know local permitting requirements and either obtain the permit or advise you if one is needed. Not pulling required permits can affect insurance claims and resale.

Fort Worth has hot, humid summers and occasional severe storms (including hail and high winds), so prioritize energy efficiency, durability, and proper water management. Look for double‑pane units with low‑E coatings and good U‑factor/SHGC ratings to reduce solar heat gain and cooling costs. For areas exposed to storms or hail, consider impact‑rated or laminated glass and frames built for higher design pressures; at minimum ask about reinforced frames and quality sealing/flashings to prevent water intrusion. Material choices (vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum‑clad wood) have different durability and maintenance needs—choose materials and finishes suited to Texas heat and humidity. Verify the product meets local code wind ratings and that installers follow manufacturer installation and flashing instructions.

Ask for a written estimate detailing products (brand, model, glass specs, energy ratings), labor, timeline, and payment schedule. Verify general liability insurance and, if important to you, whether the contractor carries workers’ compensation (Texas does not require it statewide). Confirm the contractor’s experience with local codes and permits and request local references and photos of recent jobs. Get all warranties in writing—separate manufacturer and installer/workmanship coverage—and clarify who handles warranty claims. Check local business registration, online reviews, and avoid large up‑front payments; consider a staged payment tied to milestones and request lien releases upon final payment.
