Peak Pools and Spas LLC

Texas does not have a single statewide license specific to pool builders, but most cities — including Houston — require building permits, inspections, and compliance with local codes for new pools and major remodels. Trades such as electricians and plumbers who work on pool equipment typically must hold state or local trade licenses. When hiring a contractor, ask for proof of any required city permits or registrations, verifiable trade licenses for electrical/plumbing work, general liability insurance, and proof of bonding or workers’ compensation (or an accepted alternative) if applicable.

Timelines vary with design complexity, site conditions, permitting and weather. Typical steps include permit review (often a few weeks to a couple of months), excavation and shell construction (commonly 6–12 weeks for a standard gunite pool), then finish work and equipment installation. Major remodels or equipment-only jobs are usually shorter (days to a few weeks). Houston’s clay soils, high groundwater in some neighborhoods, heavy rains or hurricane season, and peak construction demand in spring/summer can add delays, so get a written schedule and allow contingency time for permitting and weather.

Houston’s warm, humid climate increases evaporation, chemical demand, and algae risk compared with cooler climates. Expect regular upkeep: testing and balancing water (often weekly or biweekly), running and maintaining filters and pumps, periodic shock or algaecide treatments, and routine equipment checks. Consider energy-efficient equipment (variable‑speed pumps, LED lighting) to lower electricity use; salt systems are common but have different equipment corrosion considerations than traditional chlorine. Many Houston pools remain open year‑round, so winterization may be minimal, but heaters and covers still require care. Ask contractors about maintenance plans, recommended runtimes, and a realistic schedule for inspections, parts replacement, and seasonal tasks.
