Performance Windows Houston

You will often need a City of Houston building permit when replacing windows or exterior doors if the work changes the size of an opening, alters structural framing, affects egress, or is part of a larger renovation. Simple like‑for‑like sash or unit swaps sometimes do not require a permit, but the city’s permitting office makes the final determination — always check before work begins. Texas does not have a single statewide licensing program specifically for residential window and door installers; regulation and licensing for contractors is handled at the local level and some trades (electrical, plumbing, HVAC) do require state or local licenses. Regardless, hire a contractor who carries general liability insurance, can show local licenses/registrations if required, provides references, and will obtain required permits and inspections.

Many homeowners in the Houston region choose impact‑rated windows and doors because the area is prone to severe storms and hurricane‑driven windborne debris. Impact‑rated products can protect glass, help keep water and wind out, and may reduce insurance premiums in some cases. If your home is in a designated high‑wind or coastal windstorm zone, local codes or insurance requirements may mandate products with third‑party approvals (for example TDI or Miami‑Dade approvals where applicable). Even for inland properties, impact products add protection and can improve resale value. Ask your local building department and your insurer about specific code and insurance incentives for impact‑rated products before you buy.

Look for windows with an NFRC label showing U‑factor and solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) so you can compare performance; in Houston’s hot, humid climate, lower SHGC (less solar heat gain) and a good U‑factor are important. Low‑E coatings and insulated (double‑ or triple‑pane) units with inert gas fill (argon/krypton) improve comfort and reduce cooling costs. Consider materials and hardware that resist humidity and coastal corrosion if you’re near the coast (vinyl, fiberglass, or properly coated aluminum-clad options). Many manufacturers offer product warranties covering glass seals, frames, and hardware; contractors may offer a separate workmanship warranty for installation. Get all warranties in writing, note their duration and what they cover, and keep product labels and receipts for future claims.
