Preventive Pest Control

In Texas, pesticide applicators and companies must be licensed and registered with the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA). Ask the contractor for their company registration and applicator license numbers and verify them on the TDA website. Also check that the business carries liability insurance, request references or reviews from local customers in Houston, and ask about their experience treating common local pests (termites, mosquitoes, cockroaches, ants, rodents). Get a written estimate and a clear treatment plan before work begins.

Most pest control products used by licensed professionals are EPA-registered, but safety depends on the product and how it is applied. Ask the technician for the active ingredients or product names and the Safety Data Sheet (SDS). Follow their instructions about re-entry intervals, ventilating the home, and covering aquariums or food. Common precautions include keeping children and pets out of treated areas until the applicator says it’s safe, removing pet food and toys from treatment areas, and following any written post-treatment guidance. Consider integrated pest management (nonchemical exclusion and sanitation) to reduce reliance on pesticides.

Houston’s hot, humid climate and heavy rainfall make many pests active year‑round. Common issues include subterranean termites, mosquitoes, cockroaches, ants (including fire ants), rodents, and fleas/ticks. Service frequency depends on the target pest and severity: general perimeter or year‑round prevention plans are often quarterly or monthly, termite protection typically involves annual inspections and specific treatment contracts, and mosquito control may be seasonal or more frequent after storms. A licensed company should perform an inspection and recommend a customized treatment and follow‑up schedule in writing.
