RAM Windows & Doors

Many window and door projects in Dallas do require a permit if you change the size or framing of the opening, alter the structural support, or affect egress or fire-rated assemblies. Like‑for‑like replacements that do not change the opening or structural elements may in some cases not require a permit, but local rules vary. Ask your contractor to confirm permit requirements with the City of Dallas Building Inspections department and include permit pulling in the contract so work meets local code and inspection requirements.

Dallas has hot, sunny summers and occasional severe storms and hail, so prioritize solar control and durability. Look at U‑factor (lower = better insulating) and SHGC (lower helps reduce solar heat gain) to improve cooling efficiency; low‑E coatings and gas fills (argon) help performance. Choose vinyl, fiberglass, or clad‑wood frames for moisture and heat resistance, and tempered or laminated glass where local codes or insurance require impact or safety glazing. Proper flashing, weatherstripping, and airtight installation are critical to prevent water intrusion and improve comfort and energy savings.

Confirm the contractor has general liability insurance and, if applicable, workers’ compensation or an affidavit if they do not carry it. Texas does not have a statewide license specifically for window installers, so check for any required local registrations and ask for proof. Request written references, a detailed written contract listing scope (full‑frame vs insert), materials and manufacturer model numbers, who will obtain permits, timeline, payment schedule, and both manufacturer and installer warranty details. Also verify how they handle old window disposal, guaranty on seal failures for insulated glass units, and whether they will obtain HOA approvals if required.
