RAM Windows & Doors

Texas does not have a statewide license specifically for window installers, but contractors must follow local rules and building codes. In Houston you should verify the contractor is a legitimate business (registered with the state or local authorities as applicable), carries general liability insurance, and can provide a certificate of insurance and proof of workers' compensation or an alternative policy. Many cities require permits and inspections for window/door work that changes openings, structural members, or affects egress or wind resistance—so ask who will obtain permits and handle inspections. Always get a written contract, verify references, and confirm the contractor will provide lien releases and final inspection documentation.

Houston is hot, humid and subject to heavy storms and hurricane-season wind events, so choose products rated for those conditions. For coastal and high-wind areas, consider impact-rated or code-compliant windows and doors that meet local windstorm standards. Look at independent performance labels (NFRC for U-factor and SHGC) and ENERGY STAR qualifications for the hot‑humid climate zone to improve comfort and lower cooling costs. Materials matter: vinyl and fiberglass resist moisture and rot, aluminum-clad wood offers durability and aesthetics, and proper corrosion-resistant hardware is important near the coast. Most important is correct flashing, drainage, and installation technique to prevent leaks, condensation, and seal failure in high humidity—ask installers about their moisture-management and flashing procedures.

Costs vary widely based on unit size, configuration (single vs. picture, bays, sliders), glazing (double vs. triple, low‑E coatings, impact rating), frame material, labor, and whether openings change. Rather than relying on a single price, get at least three detailed written estimates. A good contract should list scope of work, brand and model numbers, NFRC ratings, whether the work includes removal and disposal, permit handling, lead times, a clear payment schedule (avoid large upfront deposits), timeline for completion, cleanup, manufacturer and workmanship warranty terms, and process for change orders. Also require proof that the installer will obtain required permits and final inspections; keep final payment until you have satisfactory completion and any required inspection sign-offs.
