Yes. In Texas HVAC contractors and technicians who install or service air‑conditioning and refrigeration equipment operate under state oversight; you can verify a contractor’s state license through the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR). In addition, anyone who handles refrigerant must have EPA Section 608 certification (federal requirement). San Antonio may also require local registration, building permits and inspections, so ask the contractor to provide their TDLR license number, EPA 608 card, proof of liability insurance and worker’s compensation (if applicable), and confirm they will pull any required City of San Antonio permits. You can independently check TDLR and the city permitting site before hiring.

A qualified contractor should perform a heat‑load calculation (often called a Manual J) that considers your home’s square footage, insulation, windows, attic ventilation, orientation and local climate. Proper sizing is critical in San Antonio’s hot, humid summers: an oversized unit will short‑cycle and worsen humidity control, while an undersized unit won’t keep you comfortable. Evaluate the system efficiency (SEER and HSPF) and refrigerant type when comparing models; higher‑efficiency equipment costs more up front but typically lowers summer energy bills. Also have the contractor inspect and, if needed, improve ductwork, airflow and thermostats—these impact comfort and efficiency as much as the equipment itself.

Get a detailed written estimate and contract that lists scope of work, brand and model numbers of equipment, efficiency ratings, refrigerant type, line‑set and ductwork changes, permit responsibilities, start and completion dates, payment schedule, and how change orders are handled. The contract should state warranty details: manufacturer parts/compressor warranty and any labor warranty the contractor provides (duration and what it covers). Also require proof of insurance, the contractor’s license/credentials, and a statement that the contractor will obtain required permits and arrange final inspections. Keep copies of invoices, warranty documents and the permit/inspection record for future service or resale.
