Royal Windoor – Windows & Doors Houston

Texas does not have a single statewide licensing program specifically for residential window and door installers, but local rules and permitting do apply. In Houston you will typically need a building permit and inspections for exterior window or door replacement or any change to structural openings; contractors usually pull those permits through City of Houston Development Services. Ask any contractor for proof of local registration (if required), a copy of their current general liability insurance, and whether they carry workers’ compensation or use insured subcontractors. Always confirm who will obtain permits and handle inspections and get that in writing.

Houston is hot, humid and in a hurricane-prone region, so prioritize both energy performance and wind/storm resistance. For energy: look for NFRC-rated performance values (U‑factor and SHGC) and low‑E coatings; in Houston a lower SHGC helps reduce solar heat gain. For storms and insurance credits consider impact‑rated products or systems tested to recognized standards (for coastal properties you may need products with ratings or approvals for high‑wind zones, such as those tested to ASTM/AAMA procedures or held to Miami‑Dade/Florida Product Approval rules). Equally important is correct flashing, drainage, and installation per AAMA/industry guidelines so frames are sealed and water is shed properly—improper installation, not just product choice, is a common cause of leaks and failure.

Get detailed, written estimates that list brand, model, glazing, frame material, hardware, whether the job is a retrofit or full-frame replacement, who will pull permits, cleanup, and a firm timeline and payment schedule. Compare not just price but scope: product specifications, installation methods (including flashing and air/water barriers), and any needed structural work. Ask for written manufacturer warranties and a separate installer workmanship warranty that states duration and what is covered. Request proof of insurance, local references or recent project photos, and a copy of the contractor’s permit history or local registrations. Finally, confirm how change orders are handled and that a final inspection will be completed and documented.
