Shield Roofing: San Antonio Roofing Company

Texas does not issue a statewide roofing contractor license, but local requirements and permits still apply. In San Antonio most roof replacements and major repairs require a building permit and inspection, so ask the contractor to pull the permit and show permit numbers. Verify the roofer has current general liability insurance and, if applicable, workers’ compensation (ask to see certificates). Check references, look up local reviews and complaints (Better Business Bureau, City of San Antonio records), get a written contract with scope, materials, timeline and payment schedule, and insist on lien releases for work completed. Be cautious with out‑of‑town storm‑chasing contractors and prefer a local company with a physical address and verifiable track record.

The time to replace a roof depends on the home’s size, roof pitch and complexity, materials chosen, whether a full tear‑off is required, and the need for structural/underlayment repairs. Typical single‑family asphalt shingle replacements are often completed in 1–3 days of on‑site work, but permitting, inspections and material lead time can extend the total project to a few days or a couple of weeks. Weather is a major factor in San Antonio—hot summer days, afternoon thunderstorms, and occasional hail can delay work. Ask the contractor for a written timeline that notes permit/inspection windows and contingency plans for weather.

San Antonio’s hot, sunny climate with periodic hail and strong winds favors materials with good heat resistance, UV stability and wind/impact ratings. Common choices include architectural asphalt shingles rated for high wind, impact‑resistant (Class 3 or 4) shingles for hail-prone events, metal roofing for heat reflection and longevity, and clay or concrete tiles for durability (with proper underlayment and flashing). Important installation details include proper attic ventilation, underlayment, flashing, and adherence to local building codes and manufacturer installation instructions. Ask the contractor for the manufacturer’s product warranty (what it covers and for how long) and a written workmanship warranty from the contractor. Also ask about recommended maintenance, expected service life in South Texas conditions, and how they handle insurance claims if damage is storm‑related.
