Texas does not have a statewide roofing contractor license; licensing and registration requirements are handled locally, and many cities (including San Antonio) require permits or local registration for roof work. Because of that, always ask a contractor for a current certificate of insurance showing general liability coverage and confirmation of any workers’ compensation status (Texas employers can opt out of state workers’ comp, so ask how employees are covered). Also check references, reviews, and that the contractor will pull required city permits and inspections.

San Antonio’s hot summers, strong sun/UV, occasional hail and wind make durability and heat management priorities. Common, well-performing options include architectural/asphalt shingles with high wind and impact ratings, metal roofing (reflective and long‑lasting), and clay or concrete tile for steeper slopes. Look for products with good UV/reflective properties, proper underlayment, correct flashing, and adequate attic ventilation and insulation—those details affect longevity and energy performance as much as the material itself.

A professional estimate or contract should list the scope of work, materials (brand, model, color), number of roofing squares, whether the job is a tear‑off or overlay, underlayment/ventilation details, start and completion dates, payment schedule, cleanup and disposal, and written warranty details (manufacturer and any contractor workmanship warranty). Confirm the contractor will pull city permits and arrange required inspections in San Antonio, and get proof of insurance. If you’re working through homeowner’s insurance, get documented photos and a clear scope of work for the insurer, and require lien releases or receipts as payments are made.
