Texan Floor Service Inc

Texas does not require a statewide flooring contractor license, but local cities or municipalities can have their own registration or permit rules, so check Houston permitting requirements for your project. Verify the contractor carries general liability insurance (and workers’ compensation if available), asks for references or examples of recent local work, and is willing to provide a written contract and itemized estimate. Also check complaint history with the Better Business Bureau or local consumer protection, and look for membership in industry groups (for example the National Wood Flooring Association) as one indicator of professionalism.

Houston’s high humidity, seasonal temperature swings and occasional flooding mean moisture is a primary concern when selecting and installing flooring. Solid hardwood is more prone to expansion, cupping and gaps in humid climates; engineered hardwood, porcelain tile and commercial-grade luxury vinyl plank are generally better choices for moisture-prone or slab-on-grade installations. Require moisture testing of the concrete subfloor (RH probe or equivalent) and proper acclimation, vapor barriers or waterproof underlayments per the manufacturer’s instructions, and make sure the installer accounts for expansion gaps and proper transition details.

A clear written contract should list scope of work, brand and grade of materials, color/lot numbers, subfloor preparation, moisture mitigation steps, schedule, cleanup, disposal of old flooring, change-order process and a detailed payment schedule. Expect a modest deposit (commonly 10–30%), progress payments tied to milestones, and final payment only after completion, inspection and receipt of lien-release waivers to protect against Texas mechanic’s liens. Ask for written manufacturer warranties for materials and a separate installer workmanship warranty with its duration and coverage spelled out, and confirm who is responsible for obtaining any required permits.
