Transom Windows and Doors

Texas does not have a statewide residential license specifically for window and door installers, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t vet contractors. Ask for proof of general liability insurance and, if they employ workers, whether they carry workers’ compensation or require subcontractors to do so. Many reputable installers are manufacturer‑certified or belong to industry groups (look for NFRC, AAMA/WDMA references) and will pull any required local permits. Verify with the City of Dallas Building Inspection whether your replacement or alteration needs a permit and insist the contractor be the one to obtain it and schedule required inspections.

Dallas has hot, sunny summers and occasional severe storms, so prioritize solar control and good thermal performance. For windows, choose insulated units (double‑pane or better) with Low‑E coatings and a gas fill (argon or krypton) to lower U‑factor and manage solar heat gain (check the NFRC labels). ENERGY STAR qualified products for the North‑Central Texas climate zone can help with cooling costs. Frame choice (vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum‑clad wood) affects durability and air leakage; for doors, insulated steel or fiberglass cores with good weatherstripping perform well. Also consider impact/tempered glass options if hail or security is a concern—Dallas is inland so coastal impact ratings are usually not required but may be chosen for added protection.

A single replacement window typically takes one to a few hours; a full‑house replacement can take several days to weeks depending on the number of units and lead times for materials. Your written contract should list the exact products (manufacturer and model), NFRC performance numbers (U‑factor, SHGC), scope of work, who pulls permits, timeline, payment schedule, debris removal, and acceptance/inspection terms. Clarify manufacturer warranties (product/glass/frame) versus the installer’s labor warranty and ask how warranty claims are handled and registered. Always get references and confirm the contractor will leave the site weather‑tight and compliant with local code before final payment.
