Vindov & Glass

Texas does not have a single statewide license specifically for window-and-door installers the way some states do for contractors. That said, reputable installers should carry general liability insurance and, where applicable, workers’ compensation or proof of subcontractor insurance. Local cities may require contractor registration or permits, so ask for proof of insurance, written estimates, references, and any local registration. Always verify the company’s reputation (reviews, local references) and confirm who will pull permits and handle inspections.

Houston’s hot, humid climate and occasional high winds mean you should prioritize energy efficiency, moisture resistance, and wind/impact protection where needed. Look for NFRC-rated products (U‑factor and SHGC) with low‑E coatings and insulated (double- or triple-pane) glass to reduce heat gain and condensation. For homes in coastal or high‑wind zones, consider impact-rated windows/doors or approved shutters; these meet specific wind‑borne debris standards required by many local codes. Also choose durable frame materials, good sealing/weatherstripping, and proper flashing and drainage details—correct installation is as important as the product.

Permit requirements vary by city and by the scope of work. Simple like‑for‑like replacements sometimes don’t need a permit, but enlarging openings, altering structural framing, adding egress windows, or installing impact‑rated units often will. Coastal or high‑wind areas commonly have additional code requirements. A professional contractor should tell you whether a permit is required, obtain it, and coordinate inspections as part of the job—get that commitment in writing and make sure permit pulls and inspection approvals are included in the contract.
