Window World of Houston

Texas does not have a single statewide license specifically for window installers the way some trades are licensed. That said, contractors should still be legitimate and accountable: ask for proof of general liability insurance and, if they have employees, workers' compensation or a certificate of insurance. Verify local requirements — some cities or municipalities require contractor registration or permits — and confirm the contractor will pull any required City of Houston permits and inspections. Check references, look at recent local job photos, read online reviews, and get a written contract that includes scope, timeline, product model numbers, payment terms, and warranty details. Manufacturer certification for particular window systems is a useful credential but is not required by state law.

Houston is in a hurricane-prone region, so impact-rated windows are common and often recommended. Whether they are required depends on your location (some coastal or high-wind zones have code or insurance requirements) and the scope of your work (new construction vs. simple replacement). Impact-rated windows are designed to resist wind-borne debris and can improve safety, reduce storm-related damage, and sometimes lower insurance premiums. If you consider impact products, ask to see third‑party test reports showing compliance with applicable wind-load and impact standards, confirm they meet local building-code requirements, and make sure the installer follows the manufacturer’s installation instructions — proper anchoring, flashing, and sealing are critical to performance.

For hot, humid Houston weather, prioritize reducing solar heat gain and air infiltration. Look at NFRC-rated numbers on the label: SHGC (solar heat gain coefficient) should be low to limit heat from sunlight, and U‑factor indicates insulating performance. Low‑E coatings and gas fills (argon or krypton) improve performance; frame materials like vinyl, fiberglass, or thermally broken aluminum reduce heat transfer. Proper installation (flashing, air sealing, insulation around frames, correct flashings) is as important as the product for preventing leaks and drafts. Request NFRC labels or product data, ask about expected energy impacts, and get both manufacturer warranty and a written workmanship warranty from the installer.
